This study aims to analyse the challenges of finding equivalence in the translation of phraseological statements in two Arabic translations of the novel Doña Perfecta by Benito Pérez Galdós, carried out by the Egyptian translator, Sabri Altohami, and the Moroccan translator, Omar Bouhachi. Through a comparative study, we examine the strategies used to translate proverbs, idioms and other expressions loaded with cultural value, in order to assess whether both translators have been able to overcome the difficulties of translating the phraseological statements and whether they have achieved full equivalence of the UFs. Another objective is to see which of these translations is more appropriate or better conveys the message that the original author wants to say. The study shows that the translator seeks to reach exact equivalence but often, due to the nature of both languages, must sacrifice either the phraseological form or part of its connotative load in order to ensure that the message is understood by the target audience.
